I'm a PlayerPRO admin!

A few days ago I got a message from SourceForge saying that I was now an administrator at the PlayerPRO project. I immediately took a crash course in in SVN and moved my contributions over. However, not everything in the directory was liked by svn, mainly the old-style Icon^M file used by the Classic Finder. Then there was the resource files that had their data in the Resource Fork. So I DeRezed most of them. It was later that I learned that the DeRez program could generate smart Rez files.
I have almost made the import/export plug-ins working, but there's one little problem in getting the plugs' information.

Facts about Universal Binaries

Apparently Ryan "icculus" Gordon got a lot of flack when he sent his FatELF patches to the Linux Kernel Mailing List. For those of you who don't know, FatELF brings to Linux what Mac has had for years: universal binaries.

Universal binaries are capable of running on different architectures while being only one file. This has the advantage of making it easier to distribute applications without the need to recompile them. The main disadvantage is that you will be using space for code that you would not use. A lot of people think that this increase would be twofold in their .deb or .rpm files. Unless the program was bigger than its data files, this would not be the case.
Also, the speed impact for the OS to load the proper part is negligible.
A Universal binary would be able to use a bare binary image (such as a library) if they were the same architecture; a bare binary would be able to use a universal binary if it had the right architecture inside of it.

PlayerPRO 5.10 compiles!

I have got it so that PlayerPRO 5.10 compiles without errors with Xcode.

…

…On PowerPC.

The thing is, one of the key structures that the program uses needs to be Big Endian, and will throw a compiler error unless you work around it. As I myself am unaware of how to do this, this remains on my to-do list.

Just because it compiles doesn't mean that it can run. There's a registration dialog that needs to be removed. Also, the plug-in architecture for the input-output is stubbed because the whole plug-in architecture (not just the input-output) needs to be re-written. Then there's the rendering issues…

Also, there are some programming ideas that work fine with CFMs and OS 9, but just aren't practical on OS X. For instance, it thinks that the plug-in code is in the Plug-in's resource fork. I don't know of any universal programs that uses this practice. I don't know that much about loading external code, but I have decided to use CFPluginCOM.

I did discover a library that has some core bits of PlayerPRO that developers could put into their apps to get them to play music. This was quite popular in games.

Just in case you are wondering, I am not a part of PlayerPRO's development team. I am just hacking (keyword hacking) this together on my free time.

New, cheap Monitor

Thursday, when I was working at Collectibles at the front of Deseret Industries, something caught my eye and I started drooling: a flat-panel monitor for $150. I did a little test to see if it worked, and the screen popped up a "No Signal" screen, so I thought it couldn't hurt to try. I was also impressed by the amount of inputs it had on the back: 2 VGA, 1 DVI. Since it was near my lunchtime, I decided to clock out, buy the monitor, then go eat. Since I didn't want to put it in my car, I had it set in the office with my name and a SOLD sign on it. When I got back from lunch, a coworker of mine said that someone else was going to come back and buy it but I got it before him. Whew! I am so glad I didn't wait! There was a thin plastic thing over the screen that I didn't look too hard at. When I got home, I read it and discovered that I got a 22" LCD Monitor. For some odd reason, my Mac used 1400x900 as the starting resolution, other than the native resolution of 1680x1050. That was easily fixed.

So far, it has been a good little display. It's a little dirty, and it sits just a bit too low for my liking, but those should be easy to fix.

Dead Holly

I had a cat that I love named Holly that has been missing for a day. We found her body
in the garden without any tracks in the snow. She was beat up, the end of her tail stripped to the bone.

She was a lovey kitty. She would sometimes sleep on me when I went to bed. she would always rub her face against me. she lately took the habit of sitting up on her hind paws while her front paws kneaded me. She always wanted to be around me. When I would lay on my back, she would jump up and knead me while I petted her

Why? Why did it have to happen? Why did she have to die?
I want the people behind this to pay

New car

Last Wednesday, I finally got a new car. It's a red Honda Civic ‘97. I admit that my parents did most of the work of finding it, but I will be paying for it. About $200 a month, if I remember correctly.

Car Crash

Yesterday I got in a car crash. Don't worry, I'm okay, but the car's totaled; I'm going to have to get a new one.

What happened: This was the first snow of the winter and I was driving to work. It was more or less blizzarding and the roads were slick. I was going on the freeway when I noticed the car in front of me was stopped. I tried to push the brakes, only to realize that the brakes weren't working. I tried pumping the brake, but all was in vain as I hit the back of the car. At this point in time I noticed that the radio, which had been playing music from my iPod Touch, was outputting static. I could also see that the hood was folded up on itself. Then I was hit from behind. After everything settled down, I called 911 on my cell phone. The guy I rammed into checked to see if I was okay, and I told him I was. I then called the Insurance, then my work. At this point, the guy returned and told me it would be a good idea if I wasn't in the road so much, so he told me to try and put the car in reverse. I started the car, but noticed that it didn't sound quite right. When I got the car in Park, it just died. I put the car in neutral and he pushed my car so that it was a bit on the shoulder. When I was calling my parents, the person who hit into me came up and we exchanged phone numbers and names. It was at this point that she noticed that the car I hit had driven off. After she left, I went looking for my iPod Touch. I found the connector under the passenger side seat, but I could not find the iPod. After awhile, my mom called and said they were on the freeway. Apparently I wasn't the only one to get in a wreck: many people had also wrecked. My parents came and invited me to their car. We waited awhile before the cops came, all that time the ice cream was melting (Yes, my parents bought ice cream in December). After everything was done with the cops, the tow truck came and got my car first because it was still sticking out into the road. All told, I got in the wreck at 1:00 PM and I was able to leave about two hours later.

Tomorrow, me and my dad are going to clean out the car and search for my iPod. Hopefully it's still in the car and not on the road broken and water-damaged.

New (or at least better) scanner

You may remember me writing earlier about Canon's lack of Mac OS X support. Well, at work at Deseret Industries (DI) I found an Epson Scanner for US$8. I was happy because the brand is in the TWAIN Working Group. However, I was disappointed to learn that the Mac OS X driver is PowerPC only, but it is an actual TWAIN driver.

Went to the Hospital

This was awhile ago, but I decided to post it for posterity. This was originally posted in RHJunior's forums, so it might sound a little broken up:

I am currently having issues breathing and am currently in the hospital trying to find out what's wrong. Prayers would be appreciated.

one doctor thought it was bowel obstruction, but the doctor here thinks it's something else.

And I'm typing on my iPod Touch.

And I hate needles.

Just had a C.T. done. Man, the iodine going through you is a strange feeling, especially when it goes past your pants.

And the battery is slowly being drained

If I end up staying overnight, my parents will get the laptop so I can charge tho iPod.

…doctor says early pneumonia

Okay, I'm home, and now that I have a proper keyboard, I'll describe a little better what was happening with me.
Yesterday (Monday), I noticed that my chest hurt when I woke up. I thought little about it so I just tried to shrug it off. However, when I tried to go to sleep, I found myself short of breath and couldn't get in a good position. I noticed this when I tried to lay down on a couch in the front room because I couldn't sleep. I tried to sleep by sitting on the couch, and other than Smudge the cat snuggling up to me, I couldn't sleep. I had said nothing about my chest pains to anyone except my dad to ask for something for the pain. Morning the next day, every one knew that I wasn't feeling good because I was sitting on the couch. My mom decides to take me to the doctor's office, only to have the doctor send me to the emergency room. There, they put an I.V. into me, both for a painkiller and for water, and did a C.T. scan. After doing different blood tests (I was stuck by a needle 4 times today >:( ) The doctor at the Hospital determined that I had early Pneumonia and pumped me with antibiotics. I'm going over there tomorrow to get more antibiotics by I.V. and my mom has a prescription for painkillers.

Please note that this was September 26, 2008, and I am in good health right now.

Wolfire's Overgrowth: new exciting game coming out

If anyone knows me, then they have probably heard me speak a little about Overgrowth, a game coming sometime next year by Wolfire Games. The main reason why I am so interested in this game is because the first game, Lugaru, was a really well done fighting game, and Overgrowth promises to be more with better looking graphics.

Also, I encourage everyone to Join the Facebook group. When it reaches 500 fans, everyone that pre-ordered will be treated to a Beta (though it's so early that they are calling it an Alpha). And yes, I pre-ordered the game. :B

New NeXTStep OS using opensource parts

I have this idea floating in my head that I want to get out. Mainly, it involves creating an OS that is source-compatible with NeXTStep. It would use GNUStep for the GUI parts and the Mach kernel to make it cross-platform. For the most part, it would use open-source technologies developed by Apple to help make setup better. For example, it would use the Core Foundation Lite for those apps that would rely on it. It would use the X11 back end of GNUStep because that is the only interface that currently works with UNIX and GNUStep.

Strange Dream

I had strange dreams last night. I dreamt that I was at a school. From what I remember, first up was a math class where the teacher said that the formula we were using was wrong. Second was either a string instrument making class, or a glove making; I think it switched halfway through. while going to the next class, I ran outside in short jeans. Did I mention it was cold outside? I bumped into someone who thought I was 16; I responded that I was 18 (in real life, I'm 20). She asked me to join something to do with band. I responded that I "Didn't know how to play an instrument musically" then corrected myself. There was a line to get into the class. Apparently two anthropomorphic animals were in the doorway talking. There was a cutscene where two or three psychic "furries" were traking something. I think one of them went to a different plane or something, and one of them, looking like Sheana from Cyantian Chronicles found the path and followed it. I can't remember what animals were in the doorway, but I nodded at one before sitting down. Apparently the teacher was ex-military and had us stand up. He then informed me about a dance or something, which my previous teacher also invited me to. The current teacher also said that the previous teacher would be either selling or giving away artwork.
I also can recall seeing an ad or something for a movie about a female robot going on a rampage and all her parts not being installed. Apparently some guy opened her back, but she noticed and closed it on his hand and turned around to see him. She was impressed by his handsomeness or something like that.
This is all I can remember in varying degrees of detail. Sorry.

Why my next scanner won't be a Canon

A few days ago I tried to get my CanoScan LiDE 80 to work with my Intel Mac. I was disappointed that the driver wasn't Intel-native. I was further disappointed to learn that I had to jump through hoops to get it to work. The fact that the scanner "Driver" consisted of a photoshop plugin instead of a proper TWAIN Driver, as well as a background application that receives button pushes from the scanner to send to another application that does what the pushed button is.

I had better luck getting my parent's CanoScan LiDE 30 working, mainly due to TWAIN SANE for Macintosh, but it makes an odd grinding noise when I try to do two scans.

When I do get a new scanner, I'm going to get one that has a native TWAIN driver, like HP or Epson, both of which are on the TWAIN board.

HTTPMail isn't working!

Apparently Microsoft decided to make it so that I can't use the HTTPMail plugin a little early. Mail for Mac OS X doesn't seem to want to sync with Hotmail any more. This doesn't make me happy. I don't want to use a Windows computer just to check my e-mail! And I don't want to use a web browser; It takes too long to get everything done.

Well, at least I can still send e-mail. At least until the end of June.
Stupid M$.

NEW MAC!!!

I got a new Mac mini just a few days ago and I LOVE IT! I used to use an old beige G3 running 10.2. But now, I can do all sorts of things I could only dream of before!

The only thing I hate about it is that now Classic (Mac OS 9) apps won't run. Also, I have to get everything transferred over. I'm almost done, only a few things left to do.

Bad display on laptop

I recently had to take in my laptop because the display was acting weird. It sometimes looked like it was doing vertical scanlines, and sometimes the display would bloom. The only thing that would fix it for a while would be to bend the screen a little but as soon as I let go, the screen would turn back to being annoying. So I took into CompUSA, where my parents bought it, so that they could fix it. They said it would be (if I remember correctly) 7 to 10 business days. I think it will be less. How hard is it to get a new screen for a laptop?

Dead Mac running

I have currently ran into a little problem: the Mac that I use won't boot up all the way. I think it's having problems with the Aqua Window Server. I had a backup SCSI drive, but I seemed to have somehow fried it when I tried to set the computer to boot to it by using the terminal. So now I have a non-working G3 that is my main computer. I will be trying to figure out ways to fix it over the next few days, and I don't want to reformat the hard drive and do a reinstall yet. And the Mac is the main computer I answer mail from, so if you write something, it may be awhile before I respond.

New…er computers!

Thursday my dad found two computers in the dumpster of a place at work (he does janitorial work) and brought them home for me. Out of all my computers in my room (all six of them) I now have one that is very close to breaking the 1GHz barrier. Yes, I said the 1 GHz barrier. This is mainly because all I have is hand-me-downs for computers. I got a 75 MHz Pentium Toshiba laptop, 120 MHz Power Mac, 333 MHz G3 Beige Power Mac that I mostly use, 500 MHz(underclocked to 400 MHz) G4 PowerPC processor in a G3 Beige that I got from my brother (but he said that it was very crashy; he blames it on a bad processor cache), 533 AMD K6 in a Compaq Presario 7478 that didn't like SuSE Linux. The "new" computers are: a Compaq Presario 5700T with a 450 MHz Pentium III processor and an AGP slot (something the 7478 lacked, much to my anger), and a Micron PC with a 1 GHz Pentium III with a very configurable BIOS <strike>and a dead clock battery</strike>(I have replaced the clock battery). I took the Hard Drives out of the old 7478 that had Linux and put it in. Of course, I had to reinstall Linux and had to fiddle around with the order of the drives, but I got it working. And set up as a router to my Mac (The Mac has all of its PCI slots filled, preventing me from using a Wi-Fi card)

Mozart Music!

Yesterday when I was going to meet my future planner, I found a $20 bill on the ground. My mom didn't know who to turn it into, so I ended up keeping it. After the session was over, we went to ShopKo to get some allergy medicine for me. While there, I saw something that got me exited: a 5-cd case of classical music. When I looked at the price, I was surprised to see it at only $9.99! I ended up getting it. It took awhile to rip them to my Mac, mainly because my Mac is slow and if a CD is idle in the third-party CD-RW drive for too long, it doesn't want to eject and it locks up the whole system.

Islam: Myths and truths

As some of you know, I have been talking mostly on RHJunior's livejournal. On one of the more recent posts, Just another enlightened world religion, I came to the following page: http://www.islam-watch.org/Mac/Myths-Truths-Islam.htm . It mostly talks about how the "West" views Islam and how it really is. It is very enlightening, and disturbing. Not only do my personal and religous views clash with those of traditional Islam, but it shows how misinformed we are towards Islam as a whole. True that some members are peaceful, some would argue subdued, but it seems that the religion itself promotes very barbaric actions and thoughts.
For example, it basically says that Islam is the superior religion and everyone else is going to hell. Not too extreme, you say? Every religion says that, you say? How about subjugation of the "non-believers"? "Kill the infadel!" It seems that all those crazy claims weren't that crazy after all.

Should we kill all Islams? OF COURSE NOT!! It is my belief that you can only punish someone by their actions, not their thoughts or religion. We can only enlighten them with our thinking, and punish all the wrongdoers.

And no, usually I am not a very sociable person. This may be the only post this month.
